Calories Don’t Count

Well, not like they used to.

Entire weight loss programs were designed around calories.

Whilst the simple maths of calories in your food, needing to be lower than calories required, works in principle for weight loss, it has some pit falls.

The main thing to think about is the quality of the calories you’re counting.

For example you might use up your ‘points’ choosing a pie for lunch, whereas choosing a nutrient-dense option with the same ‘points’ will serve your body’s nutritional requirements better.

Look for and make foods that pack the biggest nutritional punch and will nourish your body. As odd as it sounds you can be trim but unhealthy.

Where possible swap a traditional calorie laden food with a calorie laden good or better food.

Chocolate Cheesecake

For instance, a slice of raw cheesecake carries slightly more calories than a conventional one but to choose the raw option gives you quality with your quantity. In one serve of Chocolate Cheesecake you have healthy fats, fibre, essential minerals, vitamins, etc. It also delivers the satisfying creamy texture and the flavour generally meets expectations. It’s not exactly the same but it means that watching your weight doesn’t mean you miss out or have to buy a branded weight-conscious alternative with little genuine nutrition and probably containing colour, flavouring or artificial sweetener.

Oh, and the guilt…don’t we women have the most interesting relationship with food? Your raw slice of cheesecake is guilt-free if you cut yourself a polite-sized piece. Just because it’s raw, it doesn’t mean you can have as much as you want. A treat is a treat whether it’s a healthy version or not.

I think it is important to have some fat component with each meal but making sure the fats are a small feature and not the Main Event will mean you can eat a lot and never have to be hungry.

And you can achieve your weight loss goals.

If you’re a calorie counter can I encourage you to take into account the bigger picture? How is the food you’re about to eat going to serve your body?

There is more to life than calories!

In the raw food world so many of our foods are low in calories. Take advantage of it!

Now doesn’t that sound like you can have your cake and eat it, too?
