A Time to Learn

To stay up to date with the latest in your career field, you need to regularly go to conferences, workshops, listen to pocasts and read.

Whether you're a stay-at-home mother, lawyer or doctor, if you don't keep upskilling you'll get into a rut and regress rather than improve and progress. At the very least, it is motivating. To become more informed and better experienced or qualified is the optimum outcome.

For my fellow Queen City dwellers, in a couple of weeks the Green Living Show is on at Alexandra Park, Greenlane, Auckland. And guess what, folks? I'm one of the seminar Speakers. My topic is 'Raw Food and Weight Loss with Food That Tastes Great." My slot is 4pm, Saturday 12 May. For further details go to this link. I'll be taking the opportunity to attend other seminars and do some eco-shopping whilst there. Should be fun.

Here's another Expo, this time via the internet so everyone can attend. This coming Saturday, 28th April the Food Revolution Summit begins. Tune in to around 24 Speakers; there is no charge for the Summit although the calls are live only. Register here. If you know someone smart enough you might be able to record yourself. Otherwise, you do have the option to buy the Empowerment Package - downloadable interviews along with transcripts and other bonus resources.  There will be something, or several things or lots for everyone. Some I'll pass on but there are others I'll definitely want to hear. Click here for details.

What are you doing to increase your knowledge and wisdom in your life? (NB. knowledge and wisdom are not the same thing). There are many podcasts, eBooks and Programs to choose from and, don't forget your local library.

Test all things, as not everyone can be right. Bear in mind that medicine and science are constantly updating and correcting themselves. And learn to sift as you read; just because the writer has a differing outlook on life it doesn't mean all he or she wrote is to be ditched.

How Do I Eat Thee? Let Me Count the Ways

This morning my friend asked “Would I like any feijoas?” Would I like any? Is the sky blue? Is the grass green? Does Dolly Parton sleep on her back? My daughter and I were invited to forage amongst her hedges of feijoas and harvest to our heart’s content. Thank you, Bronnie!

Feijoas picked today!
Crawling along, fending off the attacks of low apple tree branches, we happily filled our bags. Occasionally feijoas were tossed to the friendly, asthmatic sheep eagerly waiting on the other side of the fence. Twenty minutes later we staggered to the car with two heavy bags, leaving plenty for the next person.

Over the next few weeks those wonderful shrubs will drop a plentiful harvest challenging the most domesticated gal to come up with ways to enjoy and preserve the largesse.

I have great intentions for my stash. They shall be dried, frozen and of course, eaten as they are. Scooped, they will be my muesli partner for breakfast. They shall appear neatly chopped for dessert with a drizzle of agave to balance the sweet and sour.  I shall make a raw Apple and Feijoa Pie. Frozen pieces will become sorbet and smoothies. Dehydrated, they will feature in my sprouted muesli and will be poked into the centre of my Chocolate Date Fudge or Nut Roll. I will try to juice some but I suspect they could be too pulpy; I need a cider press.

And if I still have any leftover I shall consider a baked cake. Did you notice that the previous ideas were all raw? Pretty good, huh?

Seasonal eating has many benefits, the most obvious being that they are usually budget- friendly; sometimes free (the ultimate Budget Friend!). Food picked at height of ripeness has the optimum nutrients. If you’re lucky enough to harvest straight from the tree, garden or vine, then essential sugars only ready with ripe fruit are there for you. (Fruit picked for supermarkets/export are mostly picked before ripening, short cutting the development of these important sugars.)

By the time the glut of your Seasonal Fruit/Vegetable is over you are usually more than ready to move on to the next arrival. Who would’ve thought I could tire of asparagus? Now long gone until next season; a dim salivating memory.

Although I’m thrilled with our bags of feijoas I know that in a few weeks I will be (almost) sick of the sight of them. But that is how it should be. Life is full of cycles.

Trillions of Bacteria Live Inside You

Today's blog is a summary of an article in The Times on probiotics.

Dr Mark Porter from The Times wrote this article entitled, 'Trillions of Bacteria Live Inside You – and it Pays to Treat Them With Respect'. If you have a subscription to The Times then you can read the entire article. For those of you who don’t here is a compact version.

Microbiota ‘…break down nutrients in our diet, manufacture vitamins, protect against infection and interact genetically with the immune system…’
‘…some characteristics, such as a high proportion of bifidobacter species, that are seen as desirable and “healthier”. And certain changes in the relative proportions of the different species are associated with illnesses ranging from asthma and eczema to diabetes, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome and cancer of the colon.’
Microbiota are picked by babies during birth…further nurtured by probiotics in breast milk…favouring growth of “healthy” bifidobacter.
Babies born by caesarean section miss out on this inoculation. It is thought to be linked to 20% higher asthma rate amongst babies born by caesarean.
Many studies done but little ‘high-grade’ evidence that pre and probiotics help. (Plenty of anecdotal and ‘non-scientific’ results – my comment)
‘Taking an antibiotic is like throwing a nuclear bomb down your gut and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary — particularly in young children.’
Good bacteria need a diet high in fruit, vegetables and whole cereals (no surprises there – my comment)
Steer clear of anyone offering colonic irrigation.

I will comment further next time but if this is something you've been thinking about and want to buy one now, then here is a link to one I highly recommend. Go to my InLiven product website. Click on Health Care (on left), then InLiven Probiotic Superfood and/or Fast-Tract Gluten Free Probiotic Liquid (tastes a little like Ginger Beer). They can be sent anywhere in the world.

The powder can be bought as a single jar or as a three-jar discounted deal. Contact me if you’d like a free copy of the interview with the creator of InLiven.

Finally, check out my new recipe ebook called, "Dips, Dressings and Sauces" available here for just $10!

Happy, safe and blessed Easter, everybody!!

Maca

This super food is my favourite. It has the pleasant taste of malt so makes a good partner to chocolate or in a smoothie with a strong fruit flavour. I have also mixed it with my sprouted muesli before dehydration.

“It promotes the optimal functioning of the hypothalamus and pituitary master glands. Maca contains unique alkaloids that stimulate the master glands, which in turn improves the overall functioning of the endocrine system.”

When I began to explore the world of super foods this is the one our supplier suggested I start with. I used to take a supplement regularly as I struggled with tiredness. Sometime after I had started maca I ran out of my supplement and forgot to order more. A few weeks later I realised I was feeling good; that bone–tired feeling hadn’t returned.

The only reason I could think of was that along with increasing my level of raw food I had also been taking maca. However, I was using the supplement when I started to go high raw too but found I still needed the boost. I had to conclude that it was the maca that made the difference.

Maca root

There’s nothing wrong with being tired; one should be at the end of a well-lived day. Bone-tired is not your normal tiredness, though, it’s indicative of something else: probably a depleted mineral or two (or more).
I wish I’d known about maca years ago.

Interestingly, it is known as an aphrodisiac. I wonder if it is more about bringing hormones back into balance and so restoring a low libido. Mothers of young children (any age child, actually) may well find some help in ‘this department’.  Whilst I’m not giving any details I can say that I have no intention of stopping the inclusion of maca powder in my (almost) daily smoothies. That’s all I’m saying.

For those of you who like the facts (as well as my Story), here they are:

Traditionally, maca has been used for:

*  Treating menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and depression, as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy [HRT]
*  Stimulating and regulating the endocrine system
*   Regulating and normalizing menstrual cycles
*  Stimulating fertility in both men and women
*  Supporting the immune system
*  Increasing energy, stamina and endurance, reducing chronic fatigue
*  Enhancing libido, treating impotence
*  Revitalizing seniors, mentally and physically

Maca contains high amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, all the essential amino acids and it contains nearly 60 phytochemicals.

Maca is a Peruvian root vegetable and looks like a turnip or radish.

Last fact: maca is available from our web Shop. It comes in 250g, 500g and 1 kg. Buy a big bag and share with a friend.
